Is There a Smarter Way to Handle Rising Medigap Premiums?

Jul 23, 2026

If you've had a Medigap Plan G for a few years, you've probably noticed the premium doesn't stay where it started. That's normal. Most Plan G policies see a rate increase every year, and by the time you're in your late 70s or 80s, that annual bump can add up to real money.

We've been looking at an alternative worth understanding if you're in good health and comfortable holding some savings in reserve: a High Deductible Plan G paired with supplemental coverage for cancer, heart attack, stroke, and hospital stays. We call it the HDG Combo Strategy.

Here's the basic idea. A High Deductible Plan G works exactly like standard Plan G once you've met your deductible for the year, covering Medicare's normal coinsurance and copays. The premium is meaningfully lower because you're taking on that deductible yourself. To offset that risk, we pair it with supplemental coverage: a lump-sum payout if you're diagnosed with cancer, a heart attack, or a stroke, and a daily cash benefit if you're hospitalized. Both pay you directly, not the hospital, so you can use the money for the deductible, other bills, or anything else.

This isn't the right fit for everyone. If an unexpected deductible year would put real financial strain on you, or if you'd simply rather not think about moving pieces, a standard Plan G or Plan N might still be the better call. But if you're healthy, have some savings set aside, and want to slow down how fast your premium climbs over the next decade, it's worth running the numbers.

We put together a full breakdown of how the three pieces work together and what the cost comparison can look like over time on our HDG Combo Strategy page .
